Sonoma Mountain Business Cluster names new Executive Director

Rohnert Park, California (March 28 2007)

The Sonoma Mountain Business Cluster (SMBC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Newell as Executive Director. As Executive Director, Newell will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the SMBC incubator. Newell replaces Jerry Gladstone, SMBC’s first Executive Director, who will transition to a part-time role and continue on the Board of Directors.

Newell is a technology industry veteran bringing a blend of business acumen and technical expertise to the role. He comes to SMBC from JDS Uniphase where he served as Business Development Manager. Previously, Newell served in a variety of roles including responsibility for business development, marketing, product development and engineering.

Newell brings real working knowledge of the small business environment and understands the challenges faced by technology-based startup ventures. Newell has a demonstrated track record of successfully navigating the path from startup to maturity and success. Newell was one of the principals of Advanced Digital Optics (ADO) – joining during the startup phase in 2000 and resulting in acquisition by JDS Uniphase in 2004. He has a PhD in Physics from the University of Queensland, and more than 10 patents to his name.

“As the lead sponsor and champion, our entire team at Codding Enterprises is extremely excited about having Michael assume the Executive Director position at SMBC”, said SMBC Board Member Brad Baker. “Michael’s credentials and enthusiasm combined with Jerry Gladstone’s excellent work and passion for success of the Business Incubator make this a great fit. Jerry has laid an excellent foundation for Michael to build upon. With the commitment from the City of Rohnert Park and the support of the SMBC Advisory Board and Board of Directors we are very confident in their success.”
